Charles Shonk, O.P. professed his solemn vows

Washington– Charles Shonk, O.P., the son of Richard and Susan Shonk of Cincinnati, OH, is one of nine men who professed his solemn vows on Saturday, August 10, at the Dominican House of Studies in Washington.

Brother Charles professed his vows in the hands of Reverend Darren Pierre, O.P., the vicar provincial, alongside Brother Boniface Endorf, O.P., Brother Innocent Vincent Smith, O.P., Brother Cassian Derbes, O.P., Brother Vincent Ferrer Bagan, O.P., Brother Cajetan Cuddy, O.P., Brother Clement Dickie, O.P., Brother Philip Neri Jordan Reese, O.P., and Brother John Baptist Hoang, O.P.

Through the profession of solemn vows, Dominican friars commit themselves until death to the work of the Dominican Order and the observance of the vows of obedience, poverty, and chastity. All nine brothers are continuing their preparation for ordination to the priesthood.

A son of St. Gertrude Catholic Church of Cincinnati, Brother Charles attended St. Charles Borromeo Preparatory School of Columbus, OH. He is an alumnus of Denison University, where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy and Latin in 2003. Before entering the Dominicans in 2009, he taught at St. Agnes Boys’ School in New York City. Brother Charles made his first profession of vows at St. Gertrude Priory in Cincinnati in 2010.

Brother Charles was then assigned to the Dominican House of Studies in 2010 where he began his studies for the priesthood. During his years at the Dominican House of Studies he has been assigned to various ministries including the Missionaries of Charity.

The Province of St. Joseph, based in New York City, was established in 1805. It has over 275 friars engaged in parish ministry, foreign missions, campus ministry, retreat work, and education. The Province also operates Providence College in Rhode Island.

Dominicana presents a new video series for the Year of Faith: To The Heights. The series begins by asking that most vexed question: how can I be happy? For nearly two thousand years, the Church has proposed one answer: true and lasting happiness comes from union with God. Yet, for many, this answer seems like a trite soundbite from a suspect source. Why should one really believe in Jesus Christ today?
