Festival Results: I am happy to report that we were able to raise $143,436.97 for our festival this year. This extra money will greatly help our finances during the year. Of course I am most grateful to Cathy Egan and the 100’s of volunteers who work so hard planning and working at the festival. It is such a beautiful thing to see so many people coming together for the financial stability of our parish and also just having a great weekend being together as a parish. I am most grateful to all our volunteers and to so many who came and supported the festival. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all that you have done for us. Also, I wish to thank Fr. Michael Mary Dosch, O.P., the Novice Master, who was so generous in allowing us to have the novices the week before the festival, novices filling in wherever they were needed during the festival, and also showing up the Monday after the festival to help clean up. What a blessing to have our novices and a Novice Master who is so supportive of the parish.

New Postulants to Arrive: Please welcome the new postulants as they will be arriving here this Tuesday, July 25 to begin their novitiate year. They will be receiving the Dominican habit in a private ceremony on August 8 and then they become official novices for the Dominican Order.

Special Event Scheduled: On Saturday, August 12, we will have a very special program here at St. Gertrude which will include three events. We hope that as many people as possible will plan to join us for this very special program in the history of our parish. These events will begin at 5:30pm, or immediately after the 4:30pm Vigil Mass.

First, the Blessing of the New Organ: After almost a full year of planning, construction, and installation of our new organ, we are ready to bless this beautiful new instrument in our parish. I am very grateful to our music program for their patience these past six months, and especially to our parishioners who have attended Mass in the Parish Center and school during the construction and installation. We are very happy to announce that Fr. Jordan Kelly, O.P., a friar from the Province of St. Joseph, and a very talented professional organist, who helped us locate this organ in Orlando, FL, will be with us to play the organ on its inaugural performance.

Second, we will be blessing a beautiful New Reliquary that will sit under the main altar in our sanctuary: A very generous and anonymous parishioner donated the money needed to construct this new reliquary. The reliquary to be located under the main altar of our church was constructed by a parishioner from our Dominican parish in Columbus, OH, Mr. Jeff Buoni. Several years ago I received several relics from the Devitt Family from our parish whose uncle was an archdiocesan priest. This donation includes the 12 Apostles and about two dozen various other saints. Also, I am donating a collection of Dominican Saints in a beautiful frame which was given to me by the Reddington Family when I was a young priest at St. Dominic Church in Youngstown, OH.

Several months ago I also received a beautiful relic of our Patroness, St. Gertrude the Great, which is also housed in a beautiful frame with a holy card of St. Gertrude. We have also acquired an elegant Benedictine Cross for the reliquary as well. These relics will be available for veneration on a table beginning at 5:30pm. You may bring a fancy cloth to touch all the relics and create for yourself a Third Class Relic of all the saints who will be located in our reliquary. If you are unfamiliar with relics, I will be placing in the bulletin next week an article about relics I retrieved off the web. Also, we are more than happy to receive more relics for our reliquary from any- one who may wish to donate them to St. Gertrude’s. Our reliquary is a special place for all our parishioners to venerate the saints.

Third, we will gather for a Pot Luck Supper in the Parish Gym to wish our 14 novices a fond goodbye: Our novices will be making Simple Profession on the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary on August 15 at the 11:30am Mass, and then will be leaving St. Gertrude to begin their studies for the priesthood in Washington, DC. Everyone is asked to bring a covered meat dish, pastas, various salads, and desserts for the potluck. The parish will provide pop, beer, and wine for the potluck.
