Epic: A Journey Through Church History

As Catholics, we are heirs to a remarkable heritage.
The history of our Faith is so much more than a list of facts
and dates. It is a fascinating story of adventure, rebellion,
tragedy, and triumph. A story 2,000 years in the making, one word
best describes Catholic history: Epic.

Epic: A Journey through Church History is a captivating
and fast-paced look at the story of the Catholic Church. Beginning
with the lives of the apostles all the way up to the present day,
Epic takes the immense history of the Church and simplifies it
into twelve, color-coded time periods. In the course of twenty
sessions, participants learn about the major people, places, and
events that comprise the captivating story of Christianity. This
Study provides participants with an understanding of Church history
that enables them to have a greater sense of meaning and identity
as Catholics.
The history of the Catholic Church is the story of our family.
It is the epic story of our ancestors in the Faith-the heroic
men and women who shaped civilization and spread the Gospel throughout
the world. Knowing this story is crucial to our identity as Catholics.
Just as we would uncover exciting and interesting stories of our
ancestors through the study of our family genealogy, we can uncover
our Catholic past through the study of Church history. Knowledge
of our Catholic story helps provide meaning to the present, and
the present determines the future.
Many in our society misunderstand and even attack the Church
for its supposed past misdeeds. Topics such as the Crusades, the
Inquisition, and Galileo are used in an attempt to discredit the
Church and its role in the world. What is the truth concerning
these events and persons? How can you answer the objections?
Teachers and historians Steve Weidenkopf and Dr. Alan Schreck
developed Epic: A Journey Through Church History to help
Catholics learn their family story and answer common objections
about the Church. Utilizing the same structure as The Great
Adventure, Epic divides the two thousand years of Church history
into twelve time periods. Central to the program is the Epic
Timeline Chart, which illustrates each time period and identifies
the main events in Church history, culture, and politics, as well
as the popes, martyrs, saints, and doctors of the Church. Each
time period is color-coded by the main theme of the period in
order to facilitate memorization.
