"When the time comes as it surely will, when we face that awesome moment, the final judgment, I've often thought, as Fulton Sheen wrote, that it is a terrible moment of loneliness. You have no advocates, you are there alone standing before God and a terror will rip through your soul like nothing you can imagine. But I really think that those in the pro-life movement will not be alone. I think there will be a chorus of voices that have never been heard in this world but are heard beautifully and clearly in the next world and they will plead for everyone who has been in this movement. They will say to God, "Spare him because he loved us," and God will look at you and say not, "Did you succeed?" but "Did you try?" -- Henry Hyde

800 Years of Grace

8/1/2016
by Katie Scott

The Order Of Preachers Celebrates Its 800th Jubilee, A Milestone Marked By Vibrant Communities And Flourishing Vocations

In early 1995, a graduate student of environmental engineering and chemistry at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore stepped into the Dominican House of Studies in Washington, D.C.

Inside, rosaries dangled from the friars’ ankle-length white tunics, chants filled the chapel, and texts of theology and philosophy lined the library shelves.

But amid the sounds and symbols of an order characterized by traditional Catholicism and rigorous study, he also encountered frequent laughter and discussions ranging from bluegrass to baseball.

The friars “were eminently human,” while “it was clear they had a strong sense of purpose,” said the now-Dominican priest, Father John Paul Walker.

That purpose – to preach the truth of Jesus Christ with intellectual reasoning and compassion – has stretched across nearly a millennium and existed under 90 popes. Founded in 1216, the order marks its 800th jubilee this year.

It is a time to celebrate not only its founding but also the increasing number of vocations around the world, including in the United States and, in particular, the St. Joseph Province, which covers the Eastern U.S. The number of active friars in the province is expected to increase by 50 percent in the next 10 years, according to figures presented at a June provincial assembly.

Part of the order’s appeal is that it combines “a very traditional sense of the faith with a strong evangelical outreach,” said Father Walker, pastor of St. Mary’s Church in New Haven, Conn., and a member of Father Michael J. McGivney Council 10705.

Family of the Year 2014 - Presented by the Knights of Columbus

Dear Parishioners,

Each year the Knights of Columbus Archbishop Elder Council nominate a “Family of the Year.” The purpose of this is to give beautiful examples of Catholic family life in our parish. Of course each year most of these families feel unworthy of this honor, and most of the time I have to cajole the families to accept this honor. The Pappalardo’s were quite humbled by this, and of course do not want to bring attention onto themselves, but to Jesus Christ who has blessed them with their beautiful family. I am most honored to be able to honor them this weekend as the 9:30am Mass as the Knights of Columbus Family of the Year. May God continue to bless Jim and Anita, and their five sons, each in their own way have generously served our parish and community. May the Lord bless all our families as we all travel the road to our heavenly homeland. Here are a few words of thanks from the Pappalardo family.

Make A Difference! Building Homes, Changing Lives (Knights of Columbus)

Update August 5, 2014: Our July Habitat work day had the Bramble Ave. house nicely taking shape. Volunteers from St. Gertrude, St. Paul Lutheran, and Notre Dame Alumni worked together installing vinyl siding on the front of the house, soffits on the front porch overhang, starting the insulation work inside, weed whacking the back yard jungle, and removing the scaffolding on the side of the house. A late morning thunderstorm rolled through, but the temporary halt to work didn't faze this hardy crew. Thanks to all who came out to make this a very successful and fun day.

Our next Habitat day is Saturday, August 23.

It's not too late to get involved!!!

Feb. Knights Korner

This month’s Knights Korner highlights the Knights of Columbus devotion to our Catholic faith and to religious vocations. At Elder Council, we believe one of our most important responsibilities is to support the religious who give so much of their time and effort to our religious formation. A few ways in which Elder Council has supported religious vocations in and around St. Gertrude parish:
- annual donation to St. Gertrude Priory to support continued novice formation

- provided labor for several landscaping projects around parish campus and priory
- provided donation toward the Eagle Scout Rosary Garden project completed last fall

"Black Madonna" Icon Welcoming Ceremony

The “Black Madonna” to visit St. Gertrude Parish

The icon of Our Lady of Czestochowa ("the Black Madonna") is reputed to have been "written" on Mary’s table top from her house in Nazareth by Luke the Evangelist. She has been credited with numerous miracles and healings — both of a spiritual and physical nature. A beautiful copy of this icon has been blessed and consecrated at the monastery of Jasna Gora in Poland, where the original is kept, and entrusted to the defense of life and family. Now, after nearly 2 years and traveling 40,000 miles from Vladivostok in Russia through 24 countries in Europe, she will be visiting St. Gertrude Parish on her global pilgrimage.

Please join us as we welcome Fr. Peter West of Human Life International and the icon of the "Black Madonna" to St. Gertrude to ask for her protection of life and family as well as personal petitions. Human Life International - a Catholic apostolate focused on building a Culture of Life around the world - is sponsoring an international campaign called From Ocean to Ocean in Defense of Life. The centerpiece of the campaign is an icon of Our Lady of Czestochowa - the "Black Madonna". Venerated in both the East and the West, the Black Madonna is credited with numerous miracles on behalf of those who have prayed for her intercession.

A welcoming ceremony and Marian devotions will be held at 7:00pm on Friday, May 9 in the church.

On Saturday morning, May 10, she will travel to the Women’s Med Center abortion facility in Sharonville. Beginning at 8:00am, we will pray the Rosary and ask for "Our Lady’s" intercession to help defend and preserve life from conception to natural death. Make plans to join us at one or both events!

On October 31, several Knights including Kurt Kaufman, Tom Hahn, Al Stevenson, and John Holden presented a check to Greg Ernst, Executive Director, St. Rita School for the Deaf.

5 Reasons to Join the Knights of Columbus

5 Reasons Why Every Catholic Man Should Join the Knights of Columbus

This month’s “Knights Korner” is from a blog post by Tom Perna posted on 10/11/13 at tomperna.org.

Last month, Pope Francis met with the Board of Directors of the Knights of Columbus at the Vatican. During his remarks, he said, “I am pleased to welcome the Board of Directors of the Knights of Columbus on the occasion of your meeting in Rome. I thank you once again for the prayers which you, and all the Knights and their families, have offered for my intentions and the needs of the Church throughout the world since my election as Bishop of Rome.

On this occasion I also wish to express my gratitude for the unfailing support which your Order has always given to the works of the Holy See ... May prayer, witness to the faith and concern for our brothers and sisters in need always be the three pillars supporting your work both individually and corporately. In fidelity to the vision of the Venerable Father Michael McGivney, may you continue to seek new ways of being a leaven of the Gospel and a force for the spiritual renewal of society.”

If you are a Catholic male over the age of 18 (or know of one) and not in the Knights of Columbus, I hope the five reasons below will encourage you to join this great fraternal organization of the Catholic Church that is founded on the principles of Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism.

1. The Heartbeat of the Knights of Columbus is Service.
The Knights are one of the largest charitable organizations in the world. Through a variety of fundraisers throughout the year, the Knights raise financial support for many charities. The service aspect of the Knights encompasses the Church, Community, Council, Family, Pro-Life, and Youth.

2. The Knights of Columbus Support the Catholic Church
because the order is composed of a fraternity of 1.8 million Catholic men. From the founding of the Knights of Columbus by Venerable Michael J. McGivney, the Knights have been a foundation of support for the Catholic Church.

Collection for the Veterans

The Knights of Columbus will be taking personal item donations for our area Veteran’s Administration offices during Veteran’s Day weekend, November 9th and 10th. Donations will be collected before each Mass on Saturday and Sunday including the 6pm Mass on Sunday, 11/10. A collection station will be placed in the parking lot entrance to the Church.

We will be taking the Crosses of the Innocents down Friday morning, November 8 beginning at 8:00am. With adequate man and woman-power, it is a pretty quick process. To any parishioner who can give an hour of their time next Friday morning, we appreciate your support.

Archbishop Elder Council - Measure Up Campaign

One of the important missions of the Knights of Columbus is in support of the COMMUNITY, especially those with special needs and the organizations who serve this population. Locally, the Archbishop Elder Council conducts an annual fundraiser ― the Measure Up campaign – to raise money for area organizations. The Measure Up campaign is the flagship charity fundraiser of the Knights of Columbus nationally and takes place each spring. This campaign supports the developmentally disabled. Elder Council Knights collect donations in front of area grocery stores; these funds are then dispersed to an organization that serves this special population.

Our 2012 campaign was in support of the Bobbie B. Fairfax School. This school – affiliated with Hamilton County developmental Disabilities Services – offers instruction to students with significant disabilities. Also, in March 2013, Elder Council organized a work party to help the school relocate an unused swing set from an overgrown corner of their property to an area where students can now use it for recreation.

They will say to God, "Spare him because he loved us," and God will look at you and say not, "Did you succeed?" but "Did you try?" --Henry Hyde

Catechists and Parent Letter Concerning Respect Life Month

From Fr. André-Joseph LaCasse, O.P., Pastor

The month of October has been designated by the Catholic Church as “Respect Life Month.” The subject of abortion is of course a grave concern in our country and throughout the world. The Catholic Church has been consistent in its teachings that abortion is a mortal sin since it is literally the murder of innocent children. The Catholic Church takes the education of this topic very seriously. It is also very important that parents, working with the Church, realize that they have the primary responsibility to educate and expose children to this important topic.

Rosary Crusade - the 95th anniversary of the last appearance of Mary at Fatima

Rosary Crusade on 10/13 - the 95th anniversary of the last appearance of Mary at Fatima - at which Fr. Andre-Joseph will be leading the rosary and Archbishop Schnurr will be speaking.

We are living at the crossroads of history. Christianity, in general, is suffering the negative consequences of the secularization process as Christian morals are considered no longer relevant in modern society. The devastating effect of this ongoing process is quite noticeable in the increased rates of criminality, divorces, pornography, drug and alcohol addictions, illicit sex, and abortions consented and paid for by our tax dollars. So today, more than ever, we need to keep the Fatima message close to our hearts and show sincere appreciation for America Needs Fatima’s efforts in fostering and promoting Christian values in the family and society in general.

As a Lithuanian bishop, I wish to take this opportunity to once more express sincerest gratitude to TFP for assisting our nation in those critical days prior to the restoration of independence that helped Lithuania achieve full independence and most important religious freedom. The collection of 5,218,520 signatures worldwide in 1990 on behalf of Lithuania was a welcome aid for beleaguered Lithuania.

No worthwhile task can ever be achieved without the dedication of and sacrifice of hardworking volunteers. Thus we thank and pray for all those Rosary volunteers who will give their all to make the America Needs Fatima a huge success and whose efforts will bring many to their senses through the powerful prayer of the Rosary. -The Most Reverend Paul A. Baltakis, O.F.M., Bishop for Lithuanian Apostolate (Ret.) Maspeth, N.Y.
