For the Christian, the funeral offers an opportunity to mourn and pray as a Church. Because the Church is eternal, we remain united even with those who have fallen asleep. Our Christian hope is in the resurrection of the dead, so we honor the dead even in their bodies.
We would like to extend our deepest condolences to you and your family during this difficult time. St. Gertrude Parish has a Bereavement Coordinator ready to assist you when you need to schedule and plan a Funeral Mass for a family member or loved one.
The normal form of the funeral is the Mass of Christian Burial, where a Mass is celebrated in the presence of the body before it is buried in the ground or in a crypt. In the United States, it is possible to most of the funeral rites at Mass with cremains where that is necessary. Where the remains cannot be present, for example, because the death and burial took place overseas, we can have a memorial Mass without the funeral rites.
The first step in this process is to call the Funeral Home, our parish office at 513-561-5954 or our Bereavement Coordinator (firstname.lastname@example.org). If you call after business hours, you will be prompted to speak with one of our priests on call.
Next, our Bereavement Coordinator will set-up a time to meet with you to plan the Funeral Mass which includes selecting readings, music, liturgy participants, and answer any questions you have. This planning session is a minimum of 60-90 minutes. The Bereavement Coordinator is also present at the Funeral Mass to assist you with any needs that may arise.
Finally, if space is available in our parish center St. Dominic Lobby, we can host a post-funeral reception for small groups coordinated by our Helping Hands group Ministry. We also provide music for the Funeral Mass through our wonderful Resurrection Choir, directed by Marty Cunningham. The Bereavement Coordinator will go over these options with you at the time of planning.
We have included links to our funeral planning form and a program template should you wish to look at these before meeting with the Bereavement Coordinator. Below is contact information for our staff.
Be assured of our willingness to support you during this trying time and of our prayers for solace and strength.
