Memorial Day: A Day of Solemnity and Celebration

Over the years, books and articles have been written about the "greatest generation" and it’s many heroes. As those who made it "great" age and pass on, today’s generation (including those represented by today’s St. Gertrude parishioners!) will assume the mantle of leadership for the next generation — our children and grandchildren — to never forget their sacrifice nor the freedoms we enjoy thanks to them.

A Special School Project

When Tim Delaney, a 1st grade student at Cincinnati Country Day School, went to school recently, he and his classmates were given a unique assignment. In class, the students learned about significant places in Cincinnati. Each student then chose one specific place in Cincinnati to do research and report on. They then constructed physical models of the places they chose. He chose St. Gertrude Church.

Not only did Tim, a St. Gertrude Religious Education Student, write a wonderful tribute to his church, but his replica of the church is something everyone can admire. Complete with landscape, bell tower, and parking lot (with Matchbox Cars instead of real ones!), Tim‘s attention to detail put him on a fast track for a future in architecture or landscape design!

His report included notes on the church‘s history, its location, why the church is important to Cincinnati, two facts about the church — when it started (1923) and the height of the bronze figure of Jesus (14 feet) — as well as a special dedication to his Mom for "taking me to see St. Gertrude."

Rally for the Heartbeat Bill

The Final Push Rally on Saturday May 19th at the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus.
8AM - 12PM Prayer and Worship
12PM - 2PM The Final Push Rally

The most important pro-life rally since 1973. Ohio is on the verge of passing historic legislation that would prevent nearly every abortion in our state and effectively challenge Roe v. Wade.

53 co-sponsors in the House passed the Heartbeat Bill, H.B. 125, last June, to guarantee that "if the heartbeat is detected, the baby is protected." Fetal heartbeats are detectable as early as six weeks.

Changes to the Website

There have been changes to website in order to help parishioners find what interests them.

  • Many of the ministries have a page that compiles all the news and events for that particular ministry e.g. the Funbunch found here You can find more ministries up under the Ministries tab (cascading menus).
  • We have reorganized the School tab and added a News tab. The items listed under these tabs are latest first (LIFO) queuing.

Fr. Albert Leaving for a New Academic Assignment

Dear Parishioners,

I regret to say that I will be leaving the parish this summer for a new academic assignment. In mid-August of this year, I will be moving to Nashville, Tennessee in order to teach English Literature at Aquinas College, a liberal arts, nursing, and teaching college administered by the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia Congregation, the same religious congregation that staffs our parish school. The past one and a half years of service here at St. Gertrude’s have provided me with some wonderful pastoral opportunities and memories. I will certainly carry the parish and its concerns with me in prayer as I return to academic life, and I hope that I will have an opportunity to visit occasionally. I want to thank all those of you who made me welcome and who have supported me during my time here, and I offer my apologies to any I have offended, and ask for your forgiveness.

Thank you to all who assisted with Confirmation!

Last Sunday, during a beautiful mass and celebration, 106 of our parish youth received the sacrament of Confirmation. Bishop Binzer was our presider. The candidates and their sponsors have journeyed together and participated in several activities to prepare them for this important Sacrament in their life. It was an incredible weekend! Thanks to the many, many people who helped these youth get ready for this important step in their spiritual journey — parents & sponsors, Sr. Gianna, O.P., our dedicated Religious Ed teachers, and Brad Bursa along with Father André-Joseph and all the parish priests who serve our community every day.
